We kick it off with our traditional Good Friday event, the Jesus Christ Superstar Singalong. Costumes encouraged! Bring your passion for the Passion down to the HiHo Lounge on Friday April 6. Doors open at 6:30 pm, singalong starts at 7:00. The Goodchildren Band will entertain from 9-9:30. The Easter Party will be held at the St. Roch Tavern and environs on Saturday, April 7 from 3-6 pm. The party will get started with the crowning of our King and Queen for Life -- New Orleans icons Al "Carnival Time" Johnson and Miss Tee Eva. Entertainment will be provided by the Goodchildren Band, the Bearded Oysters, NOLA Cherry Bombs, Silver People and more. There will be food vendors and drink specials, and the drawing for our wonderful array of raffle prizes will be held at 5:30. Our traditional stop at St. Margaret's will instead be a performance in their courtyard earlier in the day by the Goodchildren Band, with special guests. This year would have marked our 5th Annual Easter Parade, but was stymied by lack of response from the NOPD regarding a parade permit. Though hugely disappointed by this turn of events, we are dedicated to pursuing our mission, which is helping the revitalization of St. Claude and its neighborhoods through celebration and cultural preservation. We have had some additions to our lineup for the Party! In addition to the fabulous Goodchildren Band, the Silver People and the beautiful Bearded Oysters, we have the sassy NOLA Cherry Bombs! If you missed them in the parades this year, here's your chance to see one of the newest dance troupes. We also have new raffle prizes every day -- if you haven't checked the Easter 2012 page lately, you might be surprised by the number and quality of prizes! On the minus side, our friends at NOLA PyrateWeek had similar permit problems to ours, and the scheduled stage time for the Band at the Balcony conflicts with BMC's regularly scheduled programming, so we won't be able to present the Goodchildren Band at that stage. We are truly sorry about that, and looked forward to showing off our band! We have also cancelled the Doll Party -- we simply can't find dolls anymore. So if you have any or know someone who might donate some, please let us know! Our creative impulses are running around unsatisfied -- and who knows what havoc that might cause!  The Easter Party will have a spectacular kick off with the crowning of our King and Queen for Life: Mr. Al "Carnival Time" Johnson and Miss Tee Eva! As the band arrives we will honor them with music and then bestow their crowns. These two beautiful people, icons of New Orleans, have been with us since the very beginning, and we expect them to be with us for a long time to come! BIG CHANGE FOR EASTER 2012!!! Please read! 03/13/2012
Hey y'all! We've run into a couple roadblocks on the way to the Easter Parade this year. First is that NOPD will not review our parade permit until after March 19, though we have been asking since January. This simply does not give us enough time to raise the money and publicize adequately. And there is always the chance they will not give us the permit. Second is the lack of institutional support from our longtime sponsors. To date, though we have asked for $1000 among them, we have been pledged only $150. I can't see raising money and having to return it, or setting up something that might have to be canceled. So, we fall back and regroup, but we're not giving up! Never! Instead of a parade, we're throwing a party! The plan is to have the band and a couple performers put on a nice little show for the residents of St. Margaret's. Then they will join the party at the St. Roch Tavern and the neutral ground. All groups and individuals who would have marched in the parade will be invited to perform or just show off how cool they are. We'll have a drinks deal going, and invite some food vendors. We hope to be able to organize some kids' activities as well. And a raffle with fabulous prizes! We plan to have a couple doll parties, one tonight at Ms. Pearl's (712 Alvar), and to continue band practices and performances. And we're planning on continuing our Good Friday tradition of Jesus Christ Superstar at the HiHo. On Monday, I will be sending out the details on all of the above, and will keep adding to our list of performers for the party. We are very disappointed that we cannot parade, but will be doing some reorganizing with the goal of making the Goodchildren more viable and sustainable, and developing our social aid component more fully. We plan to parade next Easter, stronger and even sassier! And there WILL be a Fringe Parade in November -- stay tuned for details! In the meantime, if you would like to perform at the party, or have something for us to raffle, let me know! If you can volunteer or would be interested in our steering committee -- you would make us SO happy!
